I Lost 40kg Eating Simple Vegan Food
t

I struggled with weight and body image most of my life.
At 130kg, I finally admitted something had to change.
I didn’t want a diet. I wanted a reset.

The Four Principles that Changed Everything

1. Get Honest
With self-reflection, I could see I was the only one who was responsible for weight gain. I had to own that and get disciplined if things were going to change.
2. Get Educated
Doing something I had never done before and doing it safely meant lots of research and trial and error.
3. Explore
I didn't want to be a rabbit eating just lettuce. I love my food, so exploring and finding new spices and healthy options was really fun and felt so good.
4. Commit
The answer is willpower and self-discipline. In the past I had always caved. This time I made it my life's purpose to move forward with positive self-talk and keeping busy rather than constantly snacking.

If you’re struggling, too, start simple.
You don’t need perfection. Just honesty and consistency.

The Turning Point
When my children were born, I promised I would always be honest with them.
To do that properly, I had to be honest with myself.
I was 130 kg.
At some point I realised I wasn't just overweight—I had adopted the identity of "overweight guy."
I defended it. Justified it. Lived inside it.
So I asked myself one question:
What if I actually committed?
Owning where I was changed everything.
Being a parent—a leader—meant I had to stop sabotaging myself.

Step One: Radical Honesty
didn’t go extreme overnight. I ran a trial.
First cut:
  • Meat
  • Seafood
  • Dairy
  • Refined sugar
I still allowed the occasional drink i loved my beer and wine. This wasn’t about perfection. It was about momentum.
Within weeks I felt lighter and clearer. Energy improved. Mood lifted. But the weight didn’t move.
So I adjusted.

Step Two: Education
I went back to basics.
Whole foods. Fruit. Vegetables. Real ingredients. Less drinking especially high carbs.
I also educated myself. Films like That Sugarfilm, Cowspiracy, Earthlings and Forks Over Knives challenged what I had always accepted as normal.
I grew up around farming. Killing animals felt ordinary. But I started questioning the assumptions I had inherited.
The shift wasn’t just physical. It was mental.

Step Three: Explore.
I realised I had replaced animal products with heavy carbs—bread, pasta, rice, even nuts.
Carbs left me bloated and sluggish. So I experimented again.
New trial:
  • Carbs only from vegetables and fruit
  • Two meals per day (11am and 6pm)
  • Mostly vegetables
  • No potatoes
  • No beer or wine
  • 4–5 litres of water daily
Then I changed my environment.
On Christmas morning at 2am, I left to camp down the South Coast for two weeks.
Nature replaced routine. Simplicity replaced noise.
I walked. Swam. Reflected. Ate clean.
In two weeks, I lost 10 kg.
In the subsequent month, I shed an additional 10 kg.

Step Four: Commit.
I asked myself one simple question:
Am I eating because I’m hungry — or because I’m emotional?
If it was emotional, I didn’t eat.
Snacks became water. Walks. Swims. Quiet time.
The idle moments that once meant food became movement and clarity.

The result: 40 kg gone.
Energy back.
Clearer mind and a
different relationship with food.

The ongoing Part
Life moves. Kids grow up. Travel happens. Stress comes and goes.
I haven’t been perfect. I’ve drifted at times and put a few kilos back on.
But here’s what I know now:
When you understand the principles, you can always reset.
I’m pulling it back in—calmly and deliberately— the same way I did the first time.
This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about honesty and returning to what works.
If you’re ready, start simple. Start honest.
