Ever wondered why? It's amazing to me how gullible we all seem when we are young. We question our parents' authority on just about everything, but with food we seem to get particularly entrenched in the social norms we grow into. Is it really healthy and natural for us to drink cow milk? How much pain and suffering do we inflict on cow mums, dads, and children? Do you know that cows are drugged to keep them pregnant and producing milk, yet their calves are taken away? Sores even develop on the mothers' teats, and acceptable levels of faecal matter and pus are allowed in milk by industry experts.
One litre of milk contains 1,200 milligrammes of calcium. Our dietary needs for calcium are approximately 1,000 milligrammes per day, according to the nutritional consensus. So where else can we get calcium if not from animals? Tofu, 100 grammes, provides 350 mg of calcium Almonds, 100 grammes, provide 264 mg of calcium Sesame seeds (100 grammes) provide 100 mg of calcium Oatmeal, 100 grammes, provides 80 mg of calcium Soybeans (100 grammes) provide 77 mg of calcium Spinach, 100 grammes, provides 71mg of calcium Collard greens, 100 grammes, provide 66 mg of calcium Broccoli, 100 grammes, provides 48 mg of calcium Kale, 100 grammes, provides 29 mg of calcium Soy milk (100 ml) provides 25 mg of calcium The argument for not consuming dairy products is not only a health issue; it's also to stop cruelty to cows and other animals.
Mothers are drugged and have their children taken away. They are placed in barbaric production lines and kept on drugs to sustain pregnancy in order to keep milk production going. Children and mother cows are traumatised and separated. Sores develop on the mothers' udders, and pus gets into the milk. The milk is cooked (pasteurised) to remove some of the pus, but Australian and world health standards allow a certain element of pus in all dairy milk products. Cheese and yoghurt are even worse. Humans are the only animals in the world to consume other animals' milk. Milk is only a product for the offspring of that species for short periods after birth. So why do we consume so much? During the First World War, milk was used to keep American troops sustained through the cold European winters. When the war ended, the dairy industry complained and appealed to the US government to subsidise and allow broad-based propaganda to sell milk to Americans. Since then the dairy industry has grown worldwide. Ask yourself, is sucking from a cow's nipple what nature intended? And if we can gain the nutrients we need from plant-based means that cause no pain. Then why harm other sentient beings just for the craving of your taste buds? Stop letting corporations influence you to be a consumer of their harmful products. Take control of your life; go vegan. |
Milk explained for kids..Get Calcium from what Food? What could an animal-friendly calcium day look like?
200 grammes of tofu = 700 mg of calcium 100 grammes of almonds = 264 mg of calcium 100 grams spinach = 71mg calcium Total = 1,035mg calcium Dietary Supplements I'm not generally a believer in dietary supplements—there is nothing better than healthy, fresh food from nature. Interesting, though, when I looked into calcium. One tablet of Nature's Own contains 250 mg of calcium alone. So two tablets twice a day meet the entire calcium requirement for a day. I will still be taking the natural ingredients from fresh food. |
